Annual 'Women Refuge Support' Fundraising Project:
Every year AWDI fundraises to support women in shelters and refuges who are fleeing domestic violence in the Republic ofIr eland and Africa. Over the past few years, AWDI's raised funds have gone towards support Meath Women Refuge, Navan, Ireland, Drogheda Women & Children refuge, Co. Louth Ireland and Hellen's Shelter, Uganda.
Giving Back to Africa Project:
In 2012, AWDI initiated a project called ‘Giving back to Africa’, an initiative which has seen the group focusing on giving support to women in need in Africa. Beneficiaries include families in Africa stuggling to put their childrent through school and the LIRA Rural women and children development Initiative Transit Refuge (LIRWOCDI), popularly known as Helen’s Shelter, Northern Uganda. AWDI has become aware of and has come to appreciate, the tremendous and invaluable services rendered by Hellen’s Shelter to women from all over Uganda and neighbouring countries who, as victims of war, were forced into Internally Displaced Person (IDP) Camps, where they were vulnerable to rape, child sexual abuse and domestic violence.
'Make Christmas Count' Project:
This project was initiated in 2014 as part of activities designed to mark the 10th anniversary of AWDI. Through this project, AWDI seeks suppoirt for families and resource centres in Africa to help give less privileged families in Africa a very merry christmas. The project is actualised through the collection of gift items for children of all ages, women and men, as well as non-perishable items including cloths and shoes.
The 'Educate a Nation' Project:
As part of its 10th anniversary celebration, AWDI partnered with The Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship Scheme (LOTSS), to actualise its 'Educate a Nation' Project. The LOTSS programme is a Deji Adenuga (Nollywood A-List Actor) Scholarship Initiative which will annually supports the secondary and university education of 5 outstanding primary leaving students with excellent results but no financial means of going to school in Nigeria. Through the LOTSS programme, AWDI guarantees that the girl child is given a chance of education by ensuring that at least 2 out of the 5 qualifying recipients of the scholarship scheme are girls.
